Fact sheets summarize the impact of smoking and the effects of tobacco on priority populations. The fact sheets are based on data from our National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS), Legacy Media Tracking Survey (LMTS) and other surveys and sources.

National LGBT Communities Tobacco Action Plan (November 2004)
Over 60 LGBT health and tobacco control advocates participated in the planning process, which yielded five key action steps for reducing smoking among the LGBT community. Available through the Tobacco Technical Assistance Consortium.

Provides a comprehensive list of tobacco-related scientific literature pertaining to the Hispanic/Latino population.

APPEAL Factsheets
Asian Pacific Partners for Empowerment and Leadership (APPEAL) is a national network of organizations and individuals working towards social justice and a tobacco-free Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. These factsheets provide information on AAPI youth and tobacco, AAPIs and tobacco, the tobacco settlement, tobacco industry sponsorship, and AAPI LGBTQIs and tobacco.

Youth

Youth Tobacco Cessation: A Guide for Making Informed Decisions (2004)
A collaboration between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Canadian Tobacco Control Research Initiative, National Cancer Institute, and American Legacy Foundation (Legacy) to provide guidance to those making decisions about implementing youth cessation interventions.

Special Issue on Youth Tobacco Cessation (2003)
A special supplement to the September/October issue of the American Journal of Health Behavior presents state of the art on adolescent smoking cessation. Mental Health & Substance Use Disorders

Smoking Cessation for Persons with Mental Illness: A Toolkit for Mental Health Providers (2007).  
A 42-page binder developed by the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center and funded by the Tobacco Disparities Initiatives of the State Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership (STEPP), Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment that educates mental health care professionals about specific guidelines and strategies to use to reduce the burden of tobacco among persons with mental illnesses. Tobacco-Free Living in Psychiatric Settings: A Best-Practices Toolkit Promoting Wellness and Recovery (July 2007).

Smoke Alarm: The Truth About Smoking and Mental Illness (2007):
The New York State Department of Health funded a project conducted by the Clubhouse of Suffolk, Inc., a private not-for-profit psychiatric rehab agency to tailor intervention for patients who struggled with tobacco addiction. Asian Pacific Partners for Empowerment, Advocacy and Leadership (APPEAL)
APPEAL is a national network of organizations and individuals working towards social justice and a tobacco-free Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.

National African American Tobacco Prevention Network (NAATPN)
NAATPN is a national organization dedicated to facilitating the development and implementation of comprehensive and community competent tobacco control programs to benefit communities and people of African descent.

National Latino Council on Alcohol and Tobacco Prevention (LCAT)
A national organization dedicated to reducing the harm caused by alcohol and tobacco in the Latino community.

National LGBT Tobacco Control Network
The National LGBT Tobacco Control Network is working to support the many local tobacco control advocates in helping to eliminate tobacco health disparities for all LGBTs.

National Networks for Tobacco Control and Prevention
A one-stop shop for all priority population tobacco control information funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Office on Smoking and Health. The National Networks are comprised of six Networks that provide leadership and expertise in the development of policy related initiatives and the utilization of proven or potentially promising practices within their identified population.

National Tribal Tobacco Prevention Network (NTTPN)
NTTPN is an alliance of tobacco prevention and education advocates with the goal of improving the wellness of American Indian and Alaska Native people by working to reduce commercial tobacco use.

Tobacco Research Network on Disparities
The NCI has partnered with the American Legacy Foundation to develop and implement the Tobacco Research Network on Disparities (TReND). The mission of the Network is to understand and address tobacco-related health disparities by advancing the science, translating that scientific knowledge into practice, and informing public policy.

Pregnancy

National Partnership to Help Pregnant Smokers Quit
A coalition of diverse organizations working together to ensure that pregnant women are screened for tobacco use and receive treatment as part of their prenatal care.

Youth

Teenquit
Teenquit provides help to teens who want to quit smoking. Its components include online support for teens in their efforts to quit smoking while they participate in the Adolescent Smoking Cessation Escaping Nicotine and Tobacco program (ASCENT), a multifaceted school-based intervention. Funded by the National Institutes on Drug Abuse.

Mental Health & Substance Use Disorders

Consumers Helping Others Improve their Condition by Ending Smoking (CHOICES).
The goal of this consumer driven organization is to increase awareness of the importance of addressing tobacco use and to create a strong peer support network that encourages mental health consumers to make a positive healthy lifestyle change by addressing smoking and tobacco use.

Program for Research in Smokers with Mental Illness (PRISM). 
This research program is directed towards understanding reasons for the high rates of tobacco use among individuals with major psychiatric disorders.
 
Smoking Cessation Leadership Center (SCLC).
The SCLC website provides a list of mental health resources.  Click on title to view these resources and learn about the SLC’s Mental Health Partnership for Wellness and Smoking Cessation.
 
New York State Tobacco Dependence Resource Center aims to provide New York's chemical dependency service providers, policy makers, and researchers with cutting-edge scientific resources and support on integrating tobacco dependence interventions into chemical dependency treatment. You will first have to register to obtain these resources.
 
North American Quitline Consortium (NAQC).
The NAQC website provides information about quitline services available in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, and Mexico.

SANE Australia.
SANE Australia is a national charity working for a better life for people affected by mental illness – through campaigning, education and research. 

UMDNJ Tobacco Dependence Program (TDP)
The tobacco dependence program is dedicated to reducing the harm to health caused by tobacco use. The TDP particularly aims to provide expertise on quitting smoking for those who need it most and has several resources for tobacco users with mental illness and substance use disorders.
